Last Week Tonight, Fox News Sunday win Cable News Twitter, 2/15/15

This was an interesting Sunday in Cable News Twitter: HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” had the most mentions during its hour, while Fox News Sunday had the most mentions overall. Following LWT were the 11am Melissa Harris-Perry Show, the 9am Up w/Steve Kornacki, Fox News Sunday, and the 10 am Melissa Harris-Perry Show:

I suppose you could say that John Oliver’s show is not news, and therefore the MHP show should claim first place.  But that ignores the fact that Oliver does discuss the news and, for a half-hour show, managed to bring in more mentions overall than MHP, a two hour show.

If you look back, year over year, you see that MHP’s mentions have fallen somewhere around 50%; if her mentions were as strong as a year ago they would have been enough, on a good day, to beat Oliver.

Cashin’ In wins another Saturday, tops next 7 shows combined (2/14/15)

Fox News’ Cashin’ In won Saturday, with a very respectable 5.2K tweets during the 11am hour.   That’s better than the next 7 top ranked shows, combined.  This is especially noticeable when you look at the graph:

Hello? Is there anyone else out there?

I usually look at an absolute metric of how many mentions a show gets, but sometime’s it’s important to put it into context.  Last week, for example, Cashin’ In received over 7K mentions during its broadcast and this week it received over 5K.  Does that mean there was a drop-off in the audiece? Not really — the numbers were down proportionally for all shows, probably because audiences were either away for the holiday weekend or off shopping for last minute valentine’s day gifts.

Final note: this week I started counting both Cashin’ In by itself as well as with the panel. The reach number for the panel seems slightly off to me, although the reach for the show with and without the panel are computed individually and it could be just a quirk of timing (for example, if someone is spamming #WakeUpAmerica and their account got shut down between when the two reaches are calculated).  Twitter #s are always “inflight” because tweets and accounts can be deleted at any time.  Since the two numbers are very, very close to each other, it’s not worth worrying about.

Kelly, Hannity top the day in Cable News Twitter for Thursday, February 12, 2015

The Kelly File won best hour on Cable News Twitter Thursday while Hannity had the best day over all.  This suggests the discussion over Jon Stewart’s not-so-imminent departure from The Daily Show is starting to die down.

Following Kelly for best hour were On The Record w/Greta Van Susteren, Hannity, The Five w/Hosts, and Morning Joe:

Kelly, Stewart win Cable News Twitter on Wednesday, February 11, 2015

For a guy who said he’s going to do something maybe 8 months from now (or maybe not), Jon Stewart sure holds the the attention of Twitter, getting over 37K mentions yesterday. Meanwhile, Megyn Kelly managed to rack up almost 5K mentions during her broadcast hour. Kelly was followed by the 1 am rerun of The Daily Show, Hannity, the 9 am rerun of The Daily Show, and The Rachel Maddow Show:
