Twitter Activity in Florida’s 18th in April, 2014: The Dominoes are falling in Turnquest’s favor

A couple of things I’ll point out:

  • The mentions for Murphy are a little low because of an overly tight filter.  That will be fixed next month, but the fix doesn’t add much to his counts.
  • I left the other GOP contenders out because they have negligible presence on Twitter.
    • Alan Schlesinger got 24 mentions total in the month.
    • I can’t even find a Twitter account for Brian Lara (Twitter helpfully suggests Flo Rida, however).  The guy is a software developer and can’t handle Twitter? Come on, it’s not that hard.
    • Beverly Hires’ personal Twitter account is locked.  Her campaign Twitter account has 4 followers and no tweets.  It has a nice picture, though.  Good luck with that.
  • Carl Domino’s burst at the end of the month is almost all negative tweets from the Turnquest camp.
  • The democratic incumbent, Patrick Murphy, is still outpacing Calvin Turnquest on Twitter, but I think that the lead is illusionary.  There was a relatively quiet spell in the middle of the month for Turnquest.  Had he sustained activity equally throughout the month, he would have outpaced Murphy with ease.

Some thoughts:

  • Domino has no real independent presence on Twitter, and if you don’t show up, your straw-man gets whacked.  For a military guy, he’s getting severely outflanked. We’ve seen this movie before, it’s “Rubio-Crist”, with Carl playing the role of Charlie.
  • There’s going to be a pivot sooner rather than later in the public’s perception, because people will start to realize that Turnquest has a great shot at winning in November. A some point there’s going to be a kiss-and-make-up offer from the GOP.

Bottom line: Turnquest is the only GOP candidate who’s got the hustle to win in November. I’ve said that all along, and it’s still true.

Cable News Trending Topics for 2014-05-03

The dominant topic in Cable News on Saturday was the White House Correspondents Dinner, which was covered live on several networks.  It was sufficiently popular of a topic that it pushed Fox News’ All Benghazi, All The Time coverage to second place.

Florida’s Legislative Season Heats Up The Gubernatorial Race In April

With Florida’s legislative season underway in April, the Twitter buzz about the gubernatorial candidates picked up quite a bit, and most of the pick-up occurred in Rick Scott’s mentions:

At the same time bills were getting passed and the discussion turned from theoretical to actual, Rick Scott’s sentiment also rose significantly:

This suggests to me that discussion of the work of being governor is better than discussion of the politics of being governor for Scott.  It’s been my (unscientific) observation that Scott’s team tries to keep focus on the day-in-day-out aspects of being governor.  Maybe the flurry of new laws will cement that practical focus for him.  And maybe all Scott has to do is keep looking executive, rather than political, to prevail in November.

Still, I’m hesitant to read too much into all this until everyone goes home from Tallahassee and the discussion returns to the race itself.  The first couple of days in May show the spike at the end of April was a bit of an anomaly, so we will have to wait a while to see what the new normal is.

It would be nice to think that the Crist campaign is prepared to pounce on Scott in social media.  But as I’ve said before, the campaign is not very strong socially. Not much has changed in April, so I will just say those criticisms still stand: inconsistent level of effort, no real strategy towards content, etc. The legislative session gives him a reason (maybe not a great reason) to lay low now, but if he doesn’t come guns ablazin’ afterwards he’s putting his candidacy at risk.  God knows his “give me money because I need money” emails aren’t going to win this for him…

Cable News Twitter Ratings for Friday, May 2, 2014 — Cinco wins Dos

Ensemble shows like The View, The Five, and The Cycle are interesting to look at from the perspective of engagement.  On one hand, there is a thing which is the show and people watch it.  But then there are the hosts, and that’s who people engage with.  But with numerous hosts, it’s hard to tell if the host is getting engagement outside of the context of the show or inside.  So, in general, it’s notable when the hosts of a show get high engagement during the broadcast of the show but less notable outside of it.

On Friday, “The Five”, show and hosts, got the most mentions during it’s broadcast hour. With Benghazi being the top topic of the day, I think it’s safe to say that Benghazi is getting worked over again for a little bit of Fox outrage…
