Cable News Trending Topics for 2014-03-05

Not quite as strong of a day as yesterday for Ukraine, but it’s still in top spot.  Interestingly, Obama is trending higher than Putin, which means the focus has shifted a bit from the events to the reaction to the events.  Which makes sense, I suppose, given that on the ground not much is happening at the moment.

I note the appearance of “#turkishncosdeathfasting” in the list of hashtags.  Let’s see if that turns into the next big story the way the early appearance of Ukrainian hashtags predicted the events there.

Cable News Twitter Ratings for Wednesday, March 5, 2014 — Strong Showing for The Ed Show

Wednesday was a strong day for MSNBC’s The Ed Show, who managed to beat out a strong showing by The Rachel Maddow Show.  TRMS‘s showing is a notable as that show doesn’t cater to social media the same way The Ed Show does, and so that indicates a particularly strong response.  Also noteworthy is The Colbert Report‘s strong showing: in a half hour, it got about as many mentions as All In With Chris Hayes collected in an hour.

Events in Ukraine completely dominated cable news Twitter talk on Tuesday. Interestingly, while CNN usually takes first place by network, CNN dropped to third after Fox and MSNBC, leading me to suspect that the discussion of events had a very partisan tinge to it. Similarly, Obama, Putin, and Ukraine were top words mentioned in tweets…
