Turnquest, Murphy Dominate Buzz in Florida’s 18th Congressional District

In 2012, democrat Patrick Murphy narrowly defeated Allen West by less than 2500 votes to take Florida’s 18th congressional district, and he’s looking to repeat his victory this year in the mid-term elections.  But the closeness of the vote has encouraged a large pool of republican contenders, each who feel that without West’s baggage they could switch the district from D to R.

An early look at the race shows us that, on Twitter at least, all the buzz is around two candidates: the incumbent Murphy and the challenger Calvin Turnquest:

The other GOP contenders have plenty of time to ramp up their social media presence, but it is my observations that Mr. Turnquest has a natural fluency with social media that may be hard for them to surpass.  Given how close the last election was, it would do the GOP good to pick a candidate who can reach voters in all channels, and until the others demonstrate a core competency in Social Media, on just the mechanics of politics Mr. Turnquest looks like an early leader.

Cable News Trending Topics for Saturday, January 25, 2014: CNN Dominates with Coverage of Columbia Mall Shooting

Cable News Trending Topics for 2014-01-25

Mike Huck-a-who? After dominating Twitter on Friday, Mike Huckabee quickly faded as the outrage-du-jour and was replaced by brisk conversation about the Columbia mall shooting.  There were over 6000 tweets that mentioned the shooting, and over 5000 of them referenced CNN — in fact the vast majority of them were either retweets of CNN or quotes of CNN’s breaking news tweets.

The is a small validation of the general rule that when it comes to actual breaking news, CNN is the network of choice for people.

Trending Topics in Cable News for Friday, January 24, 2014 — Huckabee Can’t Control My Libido Edition

Cable News Trending Topics for 2014-01-24

On Friday, #cantcontrolmylibido became one of the top trending hashtags in the Cable News Twitterverse, as the fall out from Mike Huckabee’s comments hit social media.  By and large, it was driven by the massive retweets of sarcastic comments, such as “@Cosmopolitan: Skipping a meeting to read Fifty Shades under my desk. @GovMikeHuckabee #CantControlMyLibido” and “RT @emmajune: When the nude scene in your VHS of Titanic is all scratchy from rewinding #cantcontrolmylibido @GovMikeHuckabee”.  Technically speaking, they weren’t talking about a Cable News show, since Huckabee’s comments were made outside of his show, but that’s Twitter for you — the guy is a cable news show unto himself, and got over 1900 mentions on Friday.   I’m sure his timeline is spinning…
