Cable News Twitter Ratings for Monday, November 18, 2013 — Kelly File Wins

The Kelly File is proving to be a strong social media participant with another best-in-hour win on Monday.  Megyn Kellly’s audience was mostly animated by a discussion about Obama skipping the events for the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, although a discussion about Obamacare was a close second.

I had expected Anderson Cooper to claim the top spot based upon his strong results last week and the ongoing saga in Toronto.  But Ms. Kelly managed to drive a (slightly) larger Twitter conversation.  Of course, Fox News regularly beats all its competition in the Nielsen ratings, so it has a larger base to start with, but Fox News views do tend to be less active on Twitter.

Piers Morgan returned to his normal spot of best-in-day, even though only about 7% of his mentions occurred during the live broadcast of his show.  As usual, the world-wide audience lifted his counts.

I’ll also note the passing of Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell after its sudden cancellation by FXX.  It was a great show, but putting it up against Comedy Central’s powerhouse, The Daily Show, was a questionable way to foster an audience.  I think if Totally Biased had been dropped into the 10:30 ET slot, instead, it would have flourished.  Let’s hope the talented Mr. Bell finds another broadcast outlet for his (and his talented cast’s) wit soon.

Definition of terms used in this report:

  • Network: For the purposes of total network mentions, the count is the total unique tweets that mention any of the shows tracked on the network or the network’s general Twitter account (e.g., @CNN).
  • Mentions During Hour or Tweets Hour: The number of tweets that mention the show during the hour specified. For shows that are repeat later in the day, the first (and often live) showing usually garners the most mentions by a significant margin.
  • Mentions During day or Tweets Day: The total number of mentions a show received from midnight to midnight, eastern time.
  • Tweet Count: The number of tweets (including retweets) that mention a show.
  • Unique Tweeters: The number of Twitter users who have sent one or more tweets mentioning a show. If a user sends more than one tweet, they still only count once.
  • Reach: A measure of the number of impressions a collection of tweets will make. For each tweet that is sent, it adds up how many people follow the person tweeting it — how many timelines that tweet will show up in. Thus, if network A has 10,000 mentions from people with an average of 10 followers, the reach will be 100,000. On the other hand, if network B has 10,000 mentions from people with an average of 100 followers, the reach will be 1,000,000. So network B has much greater reach: tweets mentioning network B will potentially be seen 10 times as often as tweets about network A.
  • Male / Female: An estimate of the demographics of a show’s audience. Note that this number is an imprecise estimate.

Cable News Twitter Ratings for Sunday, November 17, 2013

Melissa Harris-Perry had a strong Sunday on Twitter, winning both best-hour and best-day of all cable news shows broadcast on Sunday.  It was interesting to see that MSNBC, even though it had fewer mentions than CNN, managed to achieve a much larger reach for messages; usually CNN has the largest reach of any network (see the definition of reach at the end of the article).

Looking ahead to Monday, CNN has Rob Ford on tap for an interview; this has been Twitter gold for Anderson Cooper in the past and I would be surprised if it doesn’t pay off again.  We can see Rob Ford hashtags running strong on Sunday; this is a sure sign of things to come. It’s a bit funny, since Ford isn’t a US story per se…

Cable News Twitter Ratings for November 15, 2013 — Ed Show and Anderson Cooper

MSNBC’s The Ed Show returned to its frequent best-in-hour slot on Friday, but Anderson Cooper, still riding on the strength of his Philippine typhoon coverage, won the best-in-day. Cooper’s win is no doubt facilitated by the international aspect of his story; that most of the tweets did not occur during the US broadcasts of his show is a clear sign that his conversation is now world wide.

Whenever I write an article about the great Twitter response CNN shows get — especially Piers Morgan — I inevitably get responses that trash talk CNN for getting low ratings in the US.  But for some of CNN’s personalities, their audience (and the revenues they generate) are world-wide, and judging them purely on US results is ignorant.  CNN could afford to send Anderson Cooper to the Philippines not just because of the US market, but because of the worldwide market he provides content to…

Cable News Twitter Ratings for November 14, 2013 — Anderson Cooper in Philippines

Anderson Cooper’s coverage of the Philippines has driven his Twitter ratings into first place for any cable news shows, giving him the best-in-hour and best-in-day wins.  It’s a strong sign that when world events turn CNN’s way — towards non-political events — the public turns to CNN for coverage.  The trick, of course, is to hang on to the audience when world events quiet down.  But for now, CNN is dominating the discussion on Twitter and Anderson Cooper is leading CNN.
